Long before the era of reform, comics already quite developed in Indonesia. In the past, before the Indonesian comics influenced by foreign styles, comic Indonesia has its own drawing style.
Typical theme when it is teenage romance, martial arts, humor, and puppets. Around the year 50'-an, the local artists find a new orientation in the work, which is the theme of the superhero-comics adapted from the west (like Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.).

People who play a role in this period is RA Kosasih, a comic who make comics about heroism. His most famous work is Sri Mercy, who had made a noticeable progress in the world of Indonesian comics. Many other comic artists who follow in the footsteps him for his success.

The rise of themed comic hero was severely criticized by the culture at that time, they assume comic Indonesia too terperngaruh with western concepts. Then the comic homeland find a way out, that is with the theme of the local culture. Since this discovery, started many emerging comics themed puppet. One of them-until now-famous still widespread in the archipelago is a comic Mahabharata and Ramayana.

 Increasingly entered the era of globalization, the world of comics Indonesia experienced a dramatic increase. Appears new flow, ie manga-which took Japan as the center. Manga style has dominated the local Indonesian comics in the 20th century While some are still the theme of heroic / national culture (which incidentally has not popular with the public anymore), but still drawing style is influenced by elements of the manga.
